Meet the Team

The Plumstead Make Merry is run by a team of big-hearted volunteers who are passionate about the area and its local community. Forming the Plumstead Make Merry Team, they work hard to ensure the festival takes place every year, meeting regularly in the run up to the next event.

Sarah Harper (Chair)

Sarah has lived in Plumstead for over thirty years, and joined the team in 2007 as Chair.

Sarah Harper

Her primary responsibilities are entertainment for The Bandstand and the Acoustic Cafe areas, activities, and also the event licensing, Health & Safety, and logistics. On the day of the festival, Sarah is usually found as the Stage Manager for The Bandstand and arena area.

Sarah is a mum of one, and a mixed media artist, formerly working as a successful Event Manager organising large-scale conferences, exhibitions and music events.

Deborah O’Boyle (Secretary)

Deborah was born in Plumstead in 1961 and was educated at Timbercroft, Plumstead Manor and Avery Hill College (now part of the University of Greenwich). Deborah has been a manager in a Japanese international bank, engaged in a variety of local voluntary activities and is still raising a family. She spends most her time these days cramming mathematics into young brains, fundraising and coordinating gardening at a local primary school, researching local history and grumbling.

Having attended the Make Merry festivals since 1975, Deborah eventually answered a plea for committee members in 2013. From 2016 Deborah has held the post of Secretary and has led on fundraising, spending much of her time in the run-up to the festival bidding for grants and shamelessly begging for money, this will continue for the next event

Sally Adams (Vice-Chair)

Sally started attending the Make Merry festival when she moved the Plumstead area several years ago. In 2017, she ran a face painting stall and thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere. Her children love attending the festival each year and love the family atmosphere. Sally volunteered as a steward in 2019 and immediately joined the Committee as the whole experience was so enjoyable. She is in charge of recruiting volunteers. /p>

Volunteering is a big part of Sally’s life. As well as her role within the Plumstead Make Merry Committee, she also runs Rainbow and Brownie units in Kent. Balancing these exciting commitments with full-time employment and being a mum to two gorgeous boys can be a challenge but she says the rewards far outweigh the pressures!

Daniel Torbett (Treasurer)

Daniel lives locally and is a long-time attendee of the Plumstead Make Merry, now bringing his own son to enjoy the festivities.

Daniel has a background in sales and event management at iconic London venues and works with the other volunteer committee members to bring about an affordable Make Merry for the whole community.

For the next festival Daniel continues as our Treasurer, and will also be managing the stalls applications.

I’m Hayley, having worked in retail for nearly 20 years and lived in Plumstead and the surrounding areas, I have developed a strong sense of community and was always actively involved in community work. More recently with my two daughters I have shown them the areas I grew up in and the joy and fun I used to have every year at the Plumstead Make Merry when I was their age.

For the next festival Hayley is taking a lead on promotion and marketing, with a particular focus on our social media pages.

Charlotte has lived in Plumstead on and off for over forty years, attended Plumcroft Primary School, and was a chorister for many years at St. Mark with St. Margaret Church, Plumstead Common. She has enjoyed being a patron of the Plumstead Make Merry since a child, and answered this year’s plea for Make Merry team members. She has over twenty years of experience working within the hospitality and leisure industry, including event management in several of London’s key tourist attractions.

Dee Godwin

For the past three years Dee has managed the Information Tent, and will continue to do so for the festival.

Dee has been a Plumstead resident for over 40 years.  Dee is a member of Art Plumstead and helps to run their events. These include helping to organise the annual pickle competition, the annual poetry competition and many other events for the local community. Dee also helps to run the monthly Plumstead Community Market at St. Marks’ Hall. She helps with Christmas and Summer fetes at a couple of local schools, and also writes the occasional quiz for the Friends of Shrewsbury House and Friends of Shrewsbury Park.  This has all given her a lot of experience of helping the public to enjoy an event, and just as importantly, Dee says that she enjoys volunteering, she gets back as least as much as she puts in.
